The Whale – limited edition linocut print
Limited edition of 50.
This whale print is inspired by my lifelong love of whales and dolphins. I drew, carved and printed the image on Canson Mi-Teintes navy blue paper using Cranfield traditional ink in silver. The paper measures 15.5x20.5cm. The print itself measures 10x15.5cm. Each print is titled, numbered and signed by me.
Ever since watching Flipper on TV as a kid, I have had a thing for dolphins, which quickly became a thing for whales. In my teens I was lucky enough to travel to northern Norway with my family, where we witnessed sperm whales in the wild.
Annoyingly, my camera broke just as the first whale surfaced, flipped its fluke and disappeared again. I say annoyingly, but the experience taught me the value of stopping and looking for the joy of looking, and while I don’t have the photos, I have carried this memory with me ever since.
A few years ago, I got the chance to swim for about two minutes with a small pod of completely wild dolphins while travelling back from a snorkelling trip in Zanzibar. It was just me, my guide, and at one point one of the dolphins swam beneath me. I became the watched as much as the watcher and it was one of the most magical moments of my life. This print celebrates both these experiences, the lessons these incredible creatures taught me, and the enduring memories they gave me.
Printmaking with lino is a manual craft that requires specialist tools and inks. The nature of the process means that each print is unique and may feature some speckling in the ink. This is part of what makes this artform so beautiful. Please note there may be slight variations from the print in the photo.
This is an unframed linocut print and I will send it to you in a compostable protective sleeve backed with card and a board-backed envelope to keep it sturdy and ready to frame or give as a gift.
