Mushrooms – limited edition linocut print
Limited edition of 50.
This mushroom print is inspired by my love of nature and lifelong obsession with Alice in Wonderland. I drew, carved and printed the image on Somerset Satin 300gsm paper using Ironbridge relief ink in blue-black and a bespoke red made from Cranfield inks. The paper measures 15.5x20.5cm including four deckled edges. The print itself measures 8.5x13cm. Each print is titled, numbered and signed by me.
The fly agaric mushroom – or Amanita muscaria – is known for its bright red cap and white spots, and pops up frequently in fairy tales and folklore.
In fact, it’s often called a fairy fungus and is widely considered the inspiration for the magical toadstool in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In the story, Alice meets the Caterpillar perched on a large mushroom who explains that one side can make her grow and the other shrink. Back up the rabbit hole, this poisonous mushroom is a powerful hallucinogenic and often found near birch and pine trees.
Printmaking with lino is a manual craft that requires specialist tools and inks. The nature of the process means that each print is unique and may feature some speckling in the ink. This is part of what makes this artform so beautiful. Please note there may be slight variations from the print in the photo.
This is an unframed linocut print and I will send it to you in a compostable protective sleeve backed with card and a board-backed envelope to keep it sturdy and ready to frame or give as a gift.
