The Booby – limited edition linocut print
Limited edition of 50.
This blue-footed booby print is inspired by my love of nature and celebrates a bird I’ve been fascinated by for years. I drew, carved and printed the image on Somerset Satin 300gsm paper using Ironbridge relief ink in blue-black and Caribbean blue. The paper measures 13x18cm and includes four deckled edges. The print itself measures 7.5x11.5cm. Each print is titled, numbered and signed by me.
I’ve never seen a blue-footed booby in real life, but I’ve always wanted to – who wouldn’t want to meet an animal with such spectacular feet? And it’s not just the colour of them, it’s the way the males use them – lifting them up and down in a little dance to attract a mate. The female birds are thought to choose a partner with brighter feet, since they indicate overall condition and quality of genes.
Their name is derived from the Spanish word ‘bobo’ meaning foolish or silly. It’s a mild insult in humans, but somehow apt for these incredible marine birds. Native to the subtropical and tropical regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean, about half of all breeding pairs nest on the Galápagos Islands.
Printmaking with lino is a manual craft that requires specialist tools and inks. The nature of the process means that each print is unique and may feature some speckling in the ink. This is part of what makes this artform so beautiful. Please note there may be slight variations from the print in the photo.
This is an unframed linocut print and I will send it to you in a compostable protective sleeve backed with card and a board-backed envelope to keep it sturdy and ready to frame or give as a gift.
